We spoke to Dr. Saya Nagori, MD, an ophthalmologist at The Framery about what to look for when shopping for protective eyewear, and she says it’s all about what kinds of rays they keep out. And while some are polarized, they don’t have to be.
“Sunglasses should have both UVA and UVB protection. For people who play sports and for young children, sunglasses should also be made of shatterproof lenses. If you are skiing or golfing or doing outdoor sports for an extended period of time, then it is recommended to wear wrap around sunglasses,” says Dr. Saya Nagori. “Especially during skiing or at the beach, snow and sand is highly reflective and UV rays are able to reach your eyes and eyelids from the sides. Polarization can also help some people and can also be considered, but having 100% UVA and UVB rays protection is the most important.”
